Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Review

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Review

When it comes to fitness trackers, Xiaomi has always leaded this segment in India. After the success of Mi Band 1 and 2, here’s yet another masterpiece from Xiaomi, the Mi Band 3. A lot has improved, from a new design to a bigger screen to better battery life, will this band beat Fastrack’s Reflex 2.0? Lets find out!

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Design

The design looks similar to its predecessors, but the Mi Band 3 has OLED touchscreen, something which all other budget bands lacked till now. It looks much better than Mi Band 2 with Corning Gorilla Glass protection.
Thanks to OLED display, you can view the band screen even under direct sunlight. At the back, there’s an heart rate sensor which doesn’t poke your skin like in Honor band 4. What’s unique is the way the thermoplastic strap holds the capsule. A small ridge runs along the edge of the capsule, and the strap fits perfectly. This ensures that the capsule won’t pop out accidentally during intense workouts.

A tiny capacitive button is provided below the touchscreen. It acts like a back button when single tapped and activates a function when long tapped. Xiaomi ships a USB charging cable in the box which can be plugged into any adapter or a laptop to charge the capsule.

The strap quality is decent, it has sufficient adjustment holes, so even thinnest hand can use this band. Coloured straps are also available on Amazon and Flipkart, in case you don’t like the shipped ones.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 performance

Priced at Rs 1,999, the Mi Band 3 has tons of features. Pair it with your Android or iOS device and you get to see additional information about your fitness. The band has a default screen which shows current date and time. The touchscreen has several menu options. Swipe upwards/ downwards to switch menu items, scroll left or right to enter the menu.

The heart rate sensor can be activated by long pressing the capacitive button. There’s also treadmill and exercise mode, weather, skin, notifications, distance traveled and calories burnt. Its worth noting that the order of the items can be changed from Mi Fit app. This new tracking app allows you to control the tracking activity of Mi Band 3.

In my test, I walked 2,500 steps and the band reported exact 2,500. I tried to manipulate those steps by swinging my hands standing at one place, to my surprise, the counter did increment. Moving on to distance test, I ran about 500m from my house, the distance recorded by the band was 498m which is not bad. Again, I tried to mess with the band by taking bigger steps, and this time I got the same distance (498m).

The Band has automatic heart rate tracking, using Mi Fit app we can control how frequently the band reads our heart rate. I set it to 10 minutes and performed daily activity. What’s cool about this band is that it automatically detects when the user does some intense task and the heart rate sensor starts picking readings every 30 seconds.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Heart Rate Monitor

Worried about sleep? Don’t worry, the Mi Band is your perfect companion. It was very accurate in my tests. It tracks our sleep, and splits the sleep into light sleep and deep sleep. Have issues waking up on time? Then set an alarm, and feel the power of vibrating alarm built in the band. Its very powerful and doesn’t disturb anyone in the house besides you.

I couldn’t test treadmill mode as I don’t have one:-D

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Battery Life

The Mi Band 3 contains a high-density Li-Polymer battery. A major aspect of any device. How long does it last? How much time does it take to charge? To be specific, it depends on the usage.

This is what I got after using the Mi Band 3. These reading nearly accurate and genuine from what I’ve recorded and what Xiaomi claims. A big thumbs up!

Regarding charging time, it took me around 2 hour 10 minutes to fully charge the band from 0%.

Mi Fit App

Last but not the least, the Band is merely a showpiece without using Mi Fit App. All the data sent by the band can be viewed and analysed here. Just pair it with the band and see the power of this app. The band automatically syncs with the app as long as its connected via bluetooth. To prevent the app from getting killed by Android, there’s a persistent notification icon. Sign up with Google, pair the device and you can access lots of options. Some features are as follows

Feature NameWhat it does
Unlock Screen Smartly unlocks your device without using fingreprint or PIN/ Password
Incoming CallDisplays contacts name and allows calls to be rejected from the band
Event reminderReceive reminders on the band
AlarmSets alarm
App alertsReceive notifications from the app directly on the band
Idle alertBand will vibrate when you are inactive for 1 hour
Vibrate when alarm soundsBand vibrates when enabled

The band can track sleep without activating sleep analysis. But with sleep analysis you get more details about your sleep. Also, this feature consumes a lot of battery. With regular usage as I mentioned above, I easily get around 16-17 days of battery backup.

Savvydroid’ Take

The best fitness tracker under Rs 1,999. Fastrack Reflex 2.0 is no match to the Mi Band 3. With superior built quality, 5 atm rating, and impressive battery life, it’s a must buy fitness tracker. The deal sealer is touchscreen which we haven’t seen in devices under Rs 1,999. Also, don’t compare it with Tata’s SF Rush.

Pros:

  • Amazing battery life
  • Water resistant
  • Ridge to protect the capsule from falling
  • Abundant features
  • Value for money

Cons

  • Proprietary charger
  • Step counting can be manipulated
