A fresh leaks reveals that HTC will be launching only one flagship smartphone, the HTC U12 Plus in 2018. According to an unnamed insider source, there will be no HTC U12 (a smaller version of the HTC U12+). However, a watered down version of U12 Plus might also be released bearing the name, U12 Life.
More leaks suggest that, there won’t be U Play or U Ultra series smartphones. The main reason for such move is HTC is planning to streamline its portfolio for the year.
HTC U12 Plus leaks
This week HTC silently released Desire 12 and Desire 12+ mid-range smartphones. A full specifications leak of the U12+ was released a couple of weeks ago. The phone will have a 5.99” QHD+ display, a Snapdragon 845 processor, and up to 6GB of RAM. It will also come with up to 256GB of built-in storage.
The new flagship device will have dual cameras on the rear of the phone in a 12MP + 16MP configuration, and an 8MP selfie camera. The smartphone will be IP68 certified, this means it is waterproof and dust resistant. It will also run Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box with Project Treble support and launch in single and dual SIM variants.
HTC has conceded its position as major competitor to Apple to Samsung in the past years with poor pricing and delayed launch of its products. HTC has a great opportunity to rise again with their U12 Plus. Cost has been a major factor why consumers fade away from HTC. The same report had also earlier claimed that the device would be aggressively priced and would cost less than the Samsung Galaxy S9. However, it has since removed the speculation about the pricing after talking to a second source.
